The New Britain Transportation Company has been a family run passenger transportation company since 1920.

Foundation

The company was founded by Peter A. & Rose F. Agostini.  Peter A. Agostini ran the company until his death in 1946 at which time his son, Peter R. Agostini took over as President.  The office was located at 681 Arch Street in New Britain, Connecticut and the garage was located at 333 Arch Street in  New Britain, Connecticut.

Peter A. & Rose F. Agostini purchased a 1920 Atlas Bus and competed with the trolley car for a "Nickel a Ride".

The Company survived the Great Depression and expanded its service in 1920 by purchasing Parlor Car Equipment.  It was a pioneer in motor coach service called the Blue Goose Stages.

In 1933, Blue Goose Stages ended and The New Britain Transportation Company's charter service took its place.

The Company Grows

Peter A. Agostini's other sons, Ronald and Donald, joined the company in 1953.

In 1954, The Wagner Service which included 8 buses, some land, and a garage at 781 Myrtle Street, was purchased by NBT. The Bristol Traction Company was acquired by NBT in 1965.  The New Britain Transportation Company continued to grow and in 1969, The Oak Street Bus Line was purchased by NBT.

Donald J. Agostini became President in 1969.

A New Location and New Contracts

In 1970, the office and garage were relocated to the present location of 257 Woodlawn Road in Berlin, Connecticut.

Then, in 1972 NBT began to transport students to and from school in the town of Southington.  NBT is pleased to have continued serving the citizens of the town of Southington throughout the years, even to this day.  The students of Southington rely upon NBT to provide school bus services, transportation for school-sponsored events such as athletic events and field trips.  NBT is pleased to provide transportation services for the annual Southington Apple Harvest Festival.

In 1976 a contract with The Connecticut Department of Transportation was signed to subsidize Mass Transit Routes.  This contract provides local public transportation in the towns of Berlin, New Britain, Plainville, Bristol, and parts of Cromwell, Newington, Meriden, Farmington, and West Hartford.  NBT continues to provide safe, reliable public transportation to these cities and towns.

From September 1977 until June 1982, The New Britain Transportation Company provided transportation services to the schools in the town of Wolcott.

A New Generation

In 1978, Rose F. Agostini, passed away and her daughter, Jean A. Malinowski, joined the company.

The second generation of Agostinis were now running the company.

The 1980's

Peter R. Agostini retired in 1983.  The remaining family members continued to run the company.  Jean A. Malinowski became the Vice President.  In 1987, NBT began to transport students to and from school, and for school activities, for the town of Berlin and currently maintain that contract.

In 1987, Donald J. Agostini passed away.  At this time, Peter A. Agostini, Ronald's son accepted a promotion as the Secretary/Treasurer.  The officers were as follows:

The 1990's

NBT began transporting students to and from school, and for school activities, for the city of Meriden in 1995 and is pleased to continue that service at present.

In 1996 Jean A. Malinowski retired.

The charter and commuter division was sold in 1998, however, NBT retains the operating authority should it be decided to provide these services once again.

In 1999, Ronald F. Agostini passed away.  His wife, Lillian R. Agostini inherited the company.  Peter A. Agostini became the third generation of the Agostini Family to run the company.  Lillian R. Agostini elected the following people to run the company.

Richard P. Spencer joined the company in 1984. He has worked in many capacities prior to his promotion to Secretary/Treasurer.

2005 Revival of the Charter Division

NBT is pleased to introduce an economical mode of transportation with our NEW 45 passenger coach style buses.  For your comfort, these vehicles have air ride suspension, air conditioning with individual passenger vents, large passenger windows, a DVD player with 3 LCD monitors, AM/FM stereo/CD player, reclining seats, individual seat lighting and overhead storage racks.  We can provide services for school charters, weddings, proms, corporate functions, nights on the town, etc.

2011-2016

NBT began transporting students to and from school, and for school activities, for the Town of Rocky Hill.

2017

Looking toward the future, Lillian is removing herself from some of the responsibilites of the company and looking toward semi-retirement.  We have promoted 2 long time key people to assist Peter & Rich with running the day to day operations.

2018

Dean decided to pursue another career and left NBT.  Our Risk Manager, Stephen H. Kolakowski, another loyal, long time employee, was promoted to Vice President of Operations.

2020

We have been providing quality, reliable and safe transportation service for 100 years!

NBT purchased the assets and Meriden Contract of the special school transportation division of Hunter's Ambulance Service.

2021

NBT was awarded another 5-year contract for the town of Rocky Hill and has once again started transporting students to and from school and for school activities.

 

Continuing a long tradition

The New Britain Transportation Company currently operates over three hundred vehicles.  The school bus division serves the towns of Southington, Berlin, Meriden and some CREC schools.  The city bus division mainly serves the towns of  Berlin, Bristol, New Britain, Plainville, and also serves portions of Cromwell, Farmington, Newington, Meriden and West Hartford.  NBT is privileged to continue to meet the transportation needs of Connecticut.
